Jean Cocteau
Jean Cocteau (1889–1963) was a French polymath whose prolific output spanned poetry, theatre, film, and the visual arts.
As a visual artist, Cocteau developed a distinctive, linear style characterised by elegant, fluid draughtsmanship and mythic, often androgynous figures. His line drawings, often minimal but charged with emotion, became iconic and he applied the same visual language to ceramics, stained glass, and large-scale decorative commissions, such as the Chapel of Saint-Pierre in Villefranche-sur-Mer. Cocteau’s visual work, though sometimes overshadowed by his films and writing, remains central to his legacy as a visionary and boundary-crossing artist.
