about Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso was a lifelong admirer of Honoré de Balzac, whose celebrated collection of novels and stories, La Comédie Humaine, inspired one of the artist’s most engaging late projects. Commissioned by the publisher Tériade in 1954, Picasso created a series of drawings and colour lithographs interpreting Balzac’s characters and themes.
 
Produced at Atelier Mourlot in Paris, the twelve lithographs were printed in a limited edition of 1,500. Their vibrant colour and apparent spontaneity belie the technical complexity of the lithographic process.
 
The elegant female figure seen throughout the series is widely associated with Jacqueline Roque, Picasso’s future wife and final muse. Together, these works reveal the artist reflecting on creativity, ageing and identity during a pivotal period of his later career.
